Caracalla "Liberty" Denarius |
A study in contrasts. Caracalla was one of the meanest, nastiest characters in the long list of Roman emperors (who were generally a mean and nasty bunch), yet here he is sharing a coin with Libertas - Lady Liberty herself, holding the pileus (liberty cap) out before her and leaning on her staff. The reverse inscription PM TRP XVI COS IIII PP dates the coin fairly precisely to 213 AD.
