Shilling 1938 obverse
Latin titles of George VI. Crown over central hole ; beneath, crossed sceptres, a string of teeth used by the natives as money, seven-pointed star of Australia (New Guinea being a dependency of Australia at this time) beneath. Silver coins issued with a central hole are unusual, but the New Guineans are not in the habit of wearing clothing with pockets or carrying purses.
5.38 g, 925 fine silver, 0.1600 oz ASW, reeded edge.
